"Healthy Youth/Healthy Regions Forum"

Co-hosted by Saving California Communities and Yolo County School Boards Association for Monday, May 14, 7 p.m. at Yolo County Office of Education in Woodland. Free and open to the public.

Will the Sacramento Capital Region prosper, thrive and ultimately grow into its full potential in the coming years?

"To answer this question, we have to look carefully at the well-being of young people who now inhabit the Capital region’s nine counties.  As go today's young people – tomorrow's workers, parents, neighbors and leaders – so goes the region," says Jonathan London, lead researcher  of the Healthy Youth/Healthy Regions, a two-year, multi-method study commissioned by Sierra Health Foundation with additional funding from The California Endowment and conducted by the UC Davis Center for Regional Change.

On May 14, the Yolo County School Boards Association and Saving California Communities will jointly host Jonathan London and Mindy Romero, HY/HR researcher and coordinator of study outreach, presenting the study’s results. These focus on education, physical and mental health, employment, civic engagement and the built environment.  A panel of students from Yolo County high schools, Sacramento City College and the University of California, Davis will offer their personal perspective on youth assets and challenges in the region.

"Our youth must be supported by peer and adult systems that challenge them to make the most of their talents, foster their aspirations and develop their capacity to assume ever-greater responsibility for direction of their own lives and the strength of the community," said Julie Blacklock, president of the Yolo County School Boards Association.

"This forum will provide the facts and context that allow us to design policies to better support the success of our youth," said Don Saylor, Yolo County Supervisor and co-founder of Saving California Communities.
